When you hire a construction company, you aren’t just buying bricks, mortar, or a new set of roof tiles. You are buying the peace of mind that comes from knowing the person in charge actually knows which end of a hammer is which. At JJPM Construction Ltd, that person is Tom.
Based in Barry and serving the entirety of South Wales, from the coastal winds of the Vale of Glamorgan to the busy streets of Cardiff, Newport, and Bridgend, Tom has spent nearly two decades perfecting the art of the build. As a qualified bricklayer and roofer with 17 years of hands-on experience, he’s seen it all, fixed it all, and built it all.
But who is the man behind the level? We sat down with the boss to talk shop, the JJPM "obsession" with detail, and why he’d rather rip a wall down and start again than leave a customer with something that is just "fine."
The "Hot Seat" Interview: Coffee, Construction, and No Shortcuts
Interviewer: Tom, 17 years is a long time in the trade. How did JJPM Construction Ltd come to be?
Tom: (Laughs) It feels like 17 minutes some days and 70 years on others! I started out as a qualified bricklayer and roofer, learning the ropes the hard way, on-site, in the rain, making sure every line was straight. I realized early on that there was a gap in the market for a company that combined high-end skill with actual, honest-to-God customer service. I wanted to build something where the "JJPM Standard" meant something. Now, we cover Barry, Bridgend, Cowbridge, Llantrisant, Taffs Well, Caerphilly, Newport, and Cardiff. We’ve grown, but the goal is the same: do it right, or don't do it at all.
Interviewer: We hear there’s a phrase that is strictly banned on any JJPM site. Care to share?
Tom: Ah, you mean "That’ll do." Yeah, if I hear a lad say "that’ll do," we’re having a very serious chat. In this game, "that'll do" is the enemy of quality. Whether we are laying a new porcelain patio in South Wales or repairing a chimney stack in Cowbridge, it has to be perfect. If a brick is a millimetre out or a tile isn’t sitting quite right, we go back and fix it. I’m obsessed with the details because I know the customer is going to be looking at that work for the next thirty years. It has to be right.

Interviewer: You’re big on the "Free Design" and "Written Breakdown" aspect of the business. Why is that so important to you?
Tom: Because nobody likes surprises when it comes to their bank account or their home. When we give a quote, it’s not a number scribbled on the back of a cigarette packet. Every client gets a free design to help them visualize the project and a full written breakdown of every single aspect of the work before we even pick up a shovel. It keeps us accountable and gives the homeowner total transparency. We aim for fair pricing: we aren’t the cheapest, because quality materials and skilled labour cost money, but we are the fairest. You get exactly what you pay for: excellence.
Interviewer: You mentioned materials. We see a lot of porcelain patios popping up lately. What’s your take?
Tom: Porcelain is fantastic for the South Wales climate. It’s durable, easy to clean, and looks incredibly sharp. People often ask me how it compares to natural sandstone. While sandstone has that classic, rugged look, porcelain gives you that sleek, modern finish that doesn't fade or attract moss in the same way. It’s about choosing the right tool for the job. If you want a bespoke, low-maintenance outdoor space in Cardiff or the Vale, porcelain is usually my top recommendation.
Interviewer: What’s your favourite type of project to get stuck into?
Tom: Anything that involves a total transformation. I love looking at a tired, damp garden in Barry or a leaky roof in Newport and knowing that, in a few weeks, it’s going to look like a showroom. Whether it’s a complex brickwork project or a full roofing overhaul, the satisfaction of seeing the "before and after" never gets old.

The Power Behind the Boss: The JJPM Team
While Tom steers the ship, he’s the first to admit that JJPM Construction Ltd is a team effort. He’s hand-picked a crew of specialists who share his "perfection or nothing" mentality.
✦ Jon (Qualified Machine Operator – 30 Years Experience): Jon is the backbone of our groundwork. When we’re digging out for a new driveway or prepping a foundation, Jon’s three decades of experience mean the job is done with surgical precision. If Jon’s on the machine, you know the sub-base is solid.
✦ Gareth (Qualified Bricklayer – 20 Years Experience): Gareth and Tom together represent nearly 40 years of bricklaying expertise. Gareth is a master of the craft, ensuring that every garden wall or extension is structurally flawless and aesthetically beautiful.
✦ Marc (Qualified Carpenter – 10 Years Experience): For the finishing touches that make a house a home, Marc is our man. From bespoke kitchen installs to intricate bathroom cabinetry, his eye for timber is second to none.
✦ Luke (Qualified Plumber & Roofer – 15 Years Experience): Luke brings a dual-threat skill set. Whether he’s ensuring your new bathroom is leak-proof or working alongside Tom on a major roofing project, his 15 years of trade knowledge are invaluable.
✦ Wyatt (Labourer): The engine room of the site. Wyatt is learning the "JJPM Way" from the best in the business. He’s fast, keen, and already picking up the meticulous habits that Tom insists upon.

Why Local Expertise Matters in South Wales
Being based in Barry isn't just about a postcode; it's about understanding the specific challenges of building in South Wales. We know the local stone, we know the weather patterns that batter our roofs, and we know the ground conditions that affect our driveways.
When Tom visits a site in Llantrisant or Caerphilly, he isn't just looking at a job; he’s looking at how to make a permanent improvement to a local home. This local commitment is why JJPM has built a reputation for being trustworthy and reliable. We don’t just "do a job" and disappear; we are part of the community.
Our Promise to You
At JJPM Construction Ltd, we believe that the construction process should be as stress-free as possible. That is why Tom insists on:
Direct Communication: You deal with the experts, not a middleman.
Meticulous Tidiness: We treat your home with the respect it deserves.
No Shortcuts: If it’s hidden behind a wall or under a patio, it’s still done to the highest standard.
A Bespoke Approach: No two homes are the same, and neither are our designs.
Whether you are looking to transform your garden, need a full roof replacement, or want to discuss a new project in the Vale of Glamorgan, Tom and the team are ready to bring those 17+ years of experience to your doorstep.
