7 Mistakes You’re Making with Your Driveway Drainage (and How to Fix Them)

If you live in Cardiff, Barry, or anywhere across South Wales, you know one thing for certain: it rains. A lot. When that Welsh weather hits, your driveway shouldn't turn into a swimming pool.
Proper drainage is the difference between a driveway that lasts twenty years and one that sinks, cracks, or floods your garage within two. At JJPM Construction Ltd, we’ve seen it all. Our lead, Tom, brings 17 years of experience in roofing and groundworks to every project, ensuring that what’s underneath your driveway is just as impressive as the finish on top.
Ignoring drainage isn't just a headache; it’s a structural risk. Here are the seven most common driveway drainage mistakes we see homeowners make: and exactly how we fix them.
1. Thinking "Flat" is Good
The biggest mistake starts before the first brick is even laid. Many homeowners assume a perfectly level driveway is the goal. In reality, a flat driveway is a recipe for standing water.
Water follows the path of least resistance. If there’s no slope (or "fall"), gravity can't do its job. Water will sit on the surface, eventually seeping into the subbase, weakening the ground, and causing your paving to shift.
The Fix: Professional Grading Before we start any groundwork, we survey the natural slope of your land. We ensure your driveway has a subtle fall: usually at least 1:80: to direct water away from your home and toward a suitable drainage point. Whether you’re in the Vale of Glamorgan or the hills of Caerphilly, getting the levels right is the foundation of our work.

2. Poorly Placed or Missing Aco Drains
You’ve likely seen those long, narrow metal or plastic grates at the end of driveways. Those are channel drains, often referred to as Aco drains. A common mistake is either omitting them entirely or placing them at a point where the water never actually reaches them.
If your driveway slopes toward your house or garage, an Aco drain is your frontline defence. Without it, you’re essentially inviting a flood into your home during the next Cardiff downpour.
The Fix: Precision Trench Drains We install high-quality channel drainage at the lowest point of the driveway, typically across the entrance to a garage or where the drive meets the public footpath. Our team: including Gareth and Tom: ensures the grates are set exactly 2mm below the paving surface so every drop of water is captured and diverted.
3. Relying on an Undersized Soakaway
In South Wales, the ground can get saturated quickly. A soakaway is an underground pit filled with stone or plastic crates that allows water to percolate back into the soil slowly. A huge mistake we see is contractors digging a small hole, throwing in some rubble, and calling it a "soakaway."
During a heavy storm, an undersized soakaway will back up. The water has nowhere to go, so it pushes back up the pipes and floods your driveway.
The Fix: Engineered Soakaway Crates We don't do "rubble pits." We use modern soakaway crates wrapped in geotextile membrane. This creates a high-capacity void underground that can handle peak rainfall. Jon, our qualified machine operator with 30 years of experience, ensures these are excavated to the correct depth and distance from your property's foundations.

4. Using the Wrong Subbase Materials
What’s under your driveway matters more than what’s on top. A common error is using a subbase that doesn't allow for water movement or using "dirty" stone that contains too much fine dust. Over time, this dust turns to mud, blocks the drainage, and causes "heaving" during frost.
The Fix: Clean, Angular Stone For standard driveways, we use a well-compacted subbase of MOT Type 1. However, if we are installing a permeable system, we switch to MOT Type 3, which has reduced "fines" (dust), allowing water to flow through the stone and into the ground. This meticulous attention to detail is why we often redo work that others have rushed: we refuse to accept "that’ll do."
5. Ignoring SuDS Regulations (The Legal Mistake)
Since 2008, UK law (Sustainable Drainage Systems or SuDS) states that you cannot simply let rainwater from a new driveway run onto a public road or into the main sewer system without permission. Ignoring this can lead to fines or being forced to dig up your new drive.
The Fix: Permeable Solutions We specialise in permeable paving. This allows water to filter through the gaps between the blocks and directly into the ground. It looks fantastic and keeps you 100% legal without the need for a planning application. It’s a smart, stylish, and functional way to manage Cardiff’s wet weather.

6. Not Extending Your Downspouts
Your driveway drainage isn't just about the rain hitting the ground; it’s about the rain hitting your roof, too. Many driveways are ruined because a roof downspout simply dumps hundreds of litres of water directly onto the driveway surface. This leads to heavy erosion, staining, and moss growth.
The Fix: Integrated Drainage As a qualified roofer with 17 years under his belt, Tom understands how your house and driveway need to work together. We often link your downspouts directly into the underground drainage system or a dedicated soakaway. This keeps the water off your driveway surface entirely, extending the life of your paving and keeping things looking fresh.
7. Choosing the "Cheap" Quote Over the "Right" Job
We get it: price matters. But when it comes to groundworks, "cheap" often means cutting corners on the stuff you can't see. If a contractor doesn't mention drainage, walk away. Fixing a failed drainage system often costs twice as much as doing it right the first time.
The Fix: The JJPM Way We believe in fairness in pricing and total transparency. When you get a quote from us, it includes a free design and a full written breakdown of every aspect of the work: from the depth of the dig to the specific drainage systems we’re installing.
